Goes well with

Cheeseball will happily park herself next to a speaker blasting distorted guitar, as long as parking there was her idea.

The Cheeseball DND Unisex T-Shirt is a do not disturb shirt with Cheeseball the fennec fox printed large on the chest. She sits with her eyes clamped shut and a wide, toothy grin, a pair of black headphones stretched over her head between two enormous ears. Jagged red and blue sound waves run out on both sides. Underneath, DO NOT DISTURB is stamped in heavy blue letters, which is what the DND stands for.

The headphones matter. She picked the song.

Backstory

The fennec fox spent her first years traveling with an educational wildlife program. The people responsible for her cared about the animals and paid attention when one of them had had enough. She was fed well, watched closely, given places to hide and rest, and treated like an animal with needs of her own. The work itself still meant constant movement: carriers, vehicles, temporary rooms, unfamiliar smells, new voices. Then another stop and another group of people delighted to discover that a fennec fox appeared to be mostly ears with a small fox attached.

If something caught the fennec fox's attention, she went toward it. A loose strap, a half-open case, something rolling under a table, a gap she probably could not fit through. She investigated first and accepted reality later. When an obstacle stopped her, she changed angles, dug, climbed, pawed or tried again. Being tiny changed how she reached something. It rarely stopped her trying.

That same fox could hit her limit quickly when she lost control of the space around her. Crowds, overlapping voices, quick movement, and unwanted handling could become too much. When that happened, she pulled back until she had room again. Give her space and time, and the curiosity came right back. People sometimes mistook the retreat for fear. It was closer to refusal. She had no problem approaching something that interested her. She had a much bigger problem with being approached because someone else had decided she should tolerate it.

As she matured, that mismatch became harder for her caretakers to ignore. Travel days still happened whether she was comfortable or not. The carrier still had to close. A new room could not become familiar before they reached it. Public programs came with people, movement, and attention. The staff could make accommodations, and they did. What they could not do was turn a traveling program into a permanent home.

No single bad incident forced her caretakers to act. They kept seeing the same pattern. Once the travel and crowding stopped, the fox quickly went back to investigating whatever caught her attention. She was healthy and capable. The program asked her to spend too much of her life adapting to things she had no control over.

She could keep tolerating it. They stopped treating that as a good enough reason to ask her to.

In 2026, they began looking for a permanent placement. Sunrise Sanctuary in Wyoming offered long-term care in one place, with animal retreat and choice taking priority over visitor access. It still had people and public tours. It was not going to be silent or empty. But it was stable, and stability was something the traveling program could never give her.

The transfer was arranged. One more carrier was prepared. One more trip waited. The fennec fox had no idea what Sunrise Sanctuary was, or why this trip was different from all the others. To her, the beginning looked familiar: movement, strange smells, another place waiting at the other end. The difference existed mostly in the humans' plans.

This time, there was no next stop scheduled after the one ahead.

What drives them

At story entry

Independence · Very high
The fennec fox approaches what interests her and pulls away when she needs space. Being carried from place to place leaves too few choices to her.
Trust · Moderate
Her caretakers gave her food, rest and places to hide. She still needs to choose when someone gets close, especially when strangers want to handle her.
Nerve · Very high
A narrow gap or an awkward climb usually earns another attempt. Overwhelming noise can send her into cover; curiosity returns as soon as she has room.
Control · High
She changes angles, digs and tries again when something blocks her. Losing control of the space around her is harder to tolerate than a difficult obstacle.

Fabric is Slight Sheer

  • The fabric is slightly sheer and may appear see-through, especially in lighter colors or under certain lighting conditions.
