Otto likes to keep an eye on everyone, and resting his chin on the sign helps.
This kids' dog shirt shows Otto peeking over the top of a sign, his big shaggy white face resting on the edge between two curling cream tusks. Below him, OTTO is spelled out in icy white letters with snow piled on top and icicles hanging off, set over slanted panels of bright blue and red.
Half dog and half mammoth, Otto watches over whoever is with him. He can spot trouble across a whole field and still sit down in the only doorway.

First Appearance
Prologue
TL;DR
A mammoth-sized guardian with a family dog's heart, Otto notices danger before anyone else and puts his body in its way, sometimes in the only doorway everyone needs.
Otto — Original
Brown, curly and eleven and a half feet tall at the shoulder, Otto walked prehistoric Wyoming at the back of other animals' herds. He let them choose where to go and made sure nobody got left behind on the way.
Otto — Frozen
At some point beneath the Wyoming Basin, Otto ended up locked in ice with his fur gone white, and he stayed there for ages. How he got there is still a mystery.
Otto — Post-Mutation
Out of the ice, with long white fur hanging heavy off his shoulders, Otto is back on his feet and back to his oldest habit: finding whoever is most likely to get hurt and standing between them and the trouble.
Backstory
Otto grew up moving with the seasons across prehistoric Wyoming. When the ground dried out, he followed the rivers. When storms settled over the basin, he climbed toward higher shelter. He could cross open country at a pace few animals could hold for long, and at his size most predators thought twice before testing him. He carried that strength quietly. Faced with anything new, Otto liked to stand still and study it until he had worked out whether it was dangerous.
What drew him most were animals that traveled in groups. Otto would fall in behind a migrating herd and stay there, watching its edges and leaving the front to someone else. If the herd spread too thin, he walked its flank until the stragglers drifted back toward the others. If a young or injured animal fell behind, Otto slowed down to match it. The herd always picked its own destination. Otto simply acted as though keeping everyone together had become his job, although nobody had given it to him.
One spring, during the thaw, a young grazing animal lost its footing on a riverbank and slid into a deep cut of mud and melting snow. The herd kept walking. Otto stopped. He went back to the bank, broke up its frozen edge with his front feet, and lowered his whole body into the slope so the trapped animal could scramble up against him to solid ground. Once it rejoined the herd, he stayed close to it. Every time it stumbled, he turned up at its side again, whether it still needed him or not.
Predators met a different Otto. When one came close, he put himself between it and whatever had gathered behind him, and then he waited. His warning came low and steady from deep in his chest. If the predator backed off, Otto let it leave, and he had no interest in chasing it across the country or fighting over a feeding ground. He was strong enough to turn almost any encounter into a fight, and patient enough that most of them never became one.
His awareness had one very large gap, and the gap was Otto. During a winter storm he led a group of animals to a narrow rock shelter, reached the entrance, and stopped to check that everyone had followed. They had. They were all standing out in the wind behind him, because his body filled the opening completely. When their impatience finally got through to him, he tried to turn around in a space that barely held his shoulders. He gave that up and reversed out one slow, awkward step at a time. The animals got inside once their shelter had finished backing out of the doorway. Otto looked pleased with how it had gone. The group was together, everyone was out of the storm, and as far as he could tell the plan had worked.
Because Otto was usually the strongest animal around, refusing to move usually worked. Others waited for him, followed him, or found a way around him. Every time they came through safely, Otto took it as proof that he had chosen right. He had not yet learned that another creature could see a danger as clearly as he did and still decide to face it.
Before human firelight ever reached the tree line, Otto was already crossing prehistoric Wyoming behind a loose migration, keeping one eye on the last straggler while taking up most of the trail himself.
