Fin
Backstory
Fin was born in a loving home with another Chihuahua named Chewie. He grew up with warm laps, familiar people and plenty of affection for both dogs. Fin was social, secure and fully prepared to assume that affection was the natural response to his presence.
In 2024, the husband in the family died from cancer. His widow could no longer care for Fin as she had before and placed him at Sunrise Sanctuary. He arrived with the confidence of a dog who had always been loved.
Fin adapted quickly. New people were potential admirers, comfortable surfaces were available seating, and larger animals did little to lower his expectations. His size had never made him timid, and Sunrise gave him no reason to reconsider.
His attachment to Kagen formed through ordinary repetition. Kagen understood animals, respected their space and let Fin approach when he wanted. Fin began following him through the workday. Kagen kept allowing it. Fin rested nearby while Kagen worked, then returned the next day and did it again.
Fin followed repairs, chose a soft place with a view of the room and repositioned himself whenever Kagen moved too far away. Kagen made room, checked where Fin was before closing a door and let him curl against him when the day was over.
Fin learned Kagen's patterns the way a dog learns any person he lives beside. He noticed changes in pace, posture, tone, and routine. When something felt wrong, he closed the distance. He did not understand the human causes behind every change, but he understood that Kagen was different and responded by getting closer.
Over time, Fin came to treat his place beside Kagen as both home and responsibility. He began to behave as though staying close enough and reacting quickly enough could keep anything bad from reaching Kagen. Closed doors, orders to stay behind and the physical limitations of a six-pound body have never persuaded Fin that he is unqualified.
What drives them
At story entry
- Independence · Moderate
- Fin chooses his place beside Kagen and resists being sent elsewhere. Most of his choices still lead him back to the same person.
- Trust · Very high
- Fin expects affection from people and accepts it openly. Kagen has a place in his life that all those other admirers do not.
- Nerve · Very high
- When Kagen seems at risk, Fin closes the distance. His small body has done very little to persuade him to leave protection to someone larger.
- Control · High
- Fin wants to stay where he can reach Kagen. Closed doors and instructions to leave interfere with a job Fin has already given himself.
