Kagen took one look at those red eyes and named him Murder Otter, and Mo has made no effort since to change his mind.

The Murder Otter Balloon Women's T-Shirt is a relaxed-fit otter t-shirt with a fine ink sketch of Mo across the chest. He peers out from under a heavy brow with red eyes, one paw wrapped round the string of a red balloon. His name sits below in cut-out letters that don't match.

  • Pre-shrunk combed, ring-spun cotton with a crew neck

Murder Otter

Portrait of Murder Otter

Species/Type

River Otter

First Appearance

Episode 5

TL;DR

A red-eyed river otter who escaped years of laboratory experiments and chose Sunrise as his home, Mo is fiercely independent, slow to trust, loyal once he does, and smarter than the humans around him are entirely comfortable with.

Murder Otter — Original

An ordinary-sized river otter in every way except the eyes, which are a deep, wet red all the way through. People take one look and assume he is plotting something. Occasionally they are right. More often he is floating on his back with his paws folded on his chest, because the water is nice.

Murder Otter — Post-Mutation

After the mutation, Mo's fur turns black from nose to tail. The red eyes stay exactly as they were, and so does his size.

Backstory

Long before anyone at Sunrise called him Murder Otter, he was the otter specimen. Nobody knows when he was born. By 2007 he was already in a cage inside an undisclosed laboratory, one of many animals a scientist was using in experiments meant to stretch out natural life.

What Mo understood was simpler: animals went into a certain room, terrible things happened to them there, and the same man was always the one doing it. The experiments left his size and coloring alone and turned his eyes permanently red. The scientist noticed and wrote it off as another useless side effect. Other animals came and went. Mo survived.

Eventually one procedure left him completely unresponsive. The scientist checked him, decided he had lost another subject and threw the body out. Mo woke up outside the secure part of the laboratory and ran. Years went by, and he did not age the way a river otter should. The procedure had worked. The scientist never knew.

Mo got out with the scientist's scent, voice and walk still fixed in his memory, so he kept to the streams, drainage channels and wooded edges, far enough away to stay free and close enough to find the man again. He lost the trail more than once. The man had routines, though, and routines have a way of bringing someone back. In 2025 he reached Sunrise Sanctuary.

He came expecting another laboratory. Instead he found water, trees, food and plenty of places where an otter could disappear when he wanted to be left alone. The humans fed animals without restraining them and handled them without hurting them. Nobody seemed interested in turning anything into an experiment. Mo liked it almost at once. He comes and goes as he pleases, and he keeps coming back.

Kagen, who keeps Sunrise's fences, gates and machinery running, gave him his name. During a tour group's picnic by the stream, the otter floated on his back near the far bank, and Kagen took one look at the red eyes and decided this was an otter with a schedule, one who knew when the gate got locked and which fence posts were still waiting to be fixed. He called him Murder Otter on the spot. Renji, who was leading the tour, objected that kids come to Sunrise and offered MO instead. Kagen noted that MO was the same name. Both names stuck. A minute later Mo dove, came up with a trout as long as a man's forearm, dropped it on the gravel in front of everyone and went to roll in the grass with all four feet in the air. A twenty-five-pound cat named Slug Cat stole the fish while he was busy. He chased her into the ferns and lost. That afternoon he climbed onto her bridge, took a claws-out swipe across the face and got the trout back anyway.

For an animal called Murder Otter, Mo has surprisingly firm rules. He does not kill, torture or knowingly hurt anyone innocent. He can hold a grudge for years and make someone's day much worse, but there is a line, and he keeps to it. He is also curious, playful when he feels safe, and stubborn enough to outlast nearly anything, including other people's patience. Once Mo decides something matters, getting him to let it go is close to impossible.

Mo's intelligence is uneven. Sometimes he is unmistakably an otter, scrubbing his back in the grass while a fish flops behind him. Sometimes he does something that makes everyone wonder how much he actually understands, and sometimes he is just wrong. Freedom matters to him more than anything, which makes it awkward that he keeps getting attached to the animals and people at Sunrise. The laboratory is still unfinished business. For now he has water, food, a place he keeps choosing, and a cat on a bridge who would like her fish back.
