Goes well with

Belli spent years wandering the country on foot without a destination, which was exactly how he liked it.

The Belli Journey Unisex Tee is a honey badger shirt printed in faded sepia, like a postcard from a town he didn't stay in. Belli walks low along the edge of a prairie road, dark brown with a pale band of fur running over his head and down his back. A wooden WELCOME TO COLORFUL COLORADO sign stands on two log posts behind him. He walked past it without slowing down. Dry grass and a low wire fence run out toward the horizon under a few thin clouds.

The name says Journey, which gives the trip more of a plan than Belli ever gave it.

Episode 2

TL;DR

A zoo escapee who spent years answering to nobody, Belli is a honey badger who works hard at looking like the worst idea in the room, takes fairness very seriously, and is far more loyal than he wants anyone to know.

Belli — Original

He looks like an ordinary honey badger: low to the ground, wide through the shoulders, and smaller than most of the things he refuses to back away from.

Belli — Post-Mutation

A little bigger than before and packed with dense muscle, Belli is still unmistakably a honey badger and still the last animal anyone should try to corner. So far the story has only hinted at the change: a wire hinge that snapped on the first pull, and steam rising off his back long after the work was done.

Backstory

Belli spent his earliest known years at the Oklahoma City Zoo. He was well fed and well cared for, and almost nothing in his life was his to decide. Doors opened when someone else chose to open them. Food came on someone else's schedule. Then somebody made a mistake. Routine maintenance left a service barrier unsecured, and Belli found the gap. He had no grand escape plan. He pushed through and kept going.

Life outside was harder than the zoo, and he liked it better straight away. Nobody brought food or cleared danger out of his path. In exchange, when something went wrong, he could leave. He worked his way out of the city along drainage channels and creek lines, then kept moving for years with no destination at all. He followed water when the country dried out and better hunting when a place stopped feeding him.

The road taught him that looking like trouble was the cheapest way to avoid it. He was small next to plenty of what he met, so he learned to lower his head, plant his feet and show his teeth. More often than not, that ended a fight before it began. Over the years it got harder for him to tell being respected from being feared. He never turned cruel. Once another animal backed off, he usually let it go. What he could not stand was being cornered or decided for.

In early 2026 a wooded stream carried him into northwest Wyoming, and the smells began to change. There were far more animals than open country should hold, along with hay, feed, turned soil, fencing and people. He followed the water until the trees opened onto weathered fences, packed trails and working buildings. Then he stopped outside the fence and watched. He had reached Sunrise Sanctuary.

For reasons of his own, Belli soon started digging under Sunrise. The first sign of him anyone found was a hole under a fence post by the stream. When a tree root got in his way, he gave it the long, silent stare he saves for anything ridiculous, as if giving it a fair chance to move. It didn't. So he dug out a foot and a half of it, tore the whole thing up and started a fresh hole a few feet away. That one went deeper, into cold, dark soil, until the ground gave way beneath him.

The fall dropped him into a cave system nobody had opened in a very long time, lit by violet bands in the rock, with a slope of loose dirt he could not climb back up. Deep in the cold, under a floor of ancient ice, he found an enormous white animal frozen in place and still breathing. Belli could not dig through the ice. So he dug the gravel out from under it until the whole sheet came down, and Otto climbed out of the wreckage. The giant could have walked away. He stopped four steps out and waited, and after years of answering to nobody, Belli followed him. It cost him something to do it.

When something started hunting them through the tunnels, Otto turned his body across the passage and would not let Belli past. Belli had walked away from regular meals to escape doors other people controlled, and now an animal the size of a house had decided what was good for him. Belli ended the fight his own way. He dug out the base of a rock column until the ceiling came down on the hunter, and Otto threw himself over Belli while the rock fell across his own back.

They came out into daylight beside the stream below Sunrise. Belli's first job back above ground was a wire trap under the sagebrush. He gave it the stare, then flattened it into a twisted sheet that will never hold anything again. That night he went back to the hole that had swallowed him. Otto followed a few lengths behind, stopping when Belli stopped and moving when he moved. He never once stood in Belli's way. Between those two, that counts as starting to mend.

None of the people at Sunrise have laid eyes on him yet. So far they know him only by his scrapes in the dirt, and by how far down they go.
